Although pigmentation disorders - the famous dark (brown) spots in particular - are harmless, you really want to get rid of them. But where do these spots come from? And more importantly: how to prevent and treat them?
The different types of brown spots
Age spots are caused by the overproduction of melanin in your skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color. It is produced by cells that, so to speak, absorb sunlight like sponges. The more our skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, the more these sponges saturate, causing dark spots. And with age, it's likely that our skin has already been damaged by the sun, increasing the risk of dark spots appearing. This is why they are often called age spots. They appear around the age of 40 on the face, décolleté, shoulders, and hands.

The hormonal changes can also trigger hyperpigmentation. During pregnancy, for example, many expectant mothers are decked out in a pregnancy mask that darkens the skin of the upper lip, forehead, and cheeks. Women who take birth control pills may also see these spots appear. And sometimes this pigmentation is simply due to changes in estrogen and progesterone levels that occur during a "normal" menstrual cycle.
Finally, brown or red spots can also appear where the skin has been injured or irritated, acne scars for example. These hyperpigmented spots appear mainly on the T zone, where acne manifests itself.
How to treat pigment spots?
First of all, it is important to protect your skin from the sun. Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun, preferably with a factor of 30 or 50, and reapply every two hours. This is also valid when swimming, and even with a water-resistant cream. Make sure your product protects against UV-A, as these are the rays that make your skin age faster. During pregnancy or in times of hormonal upheaval (for example, during fertility treatment), these precautions are all the more important.
